Community Liaison Group

The operational parts of the Hunua Quarry’s land is in a quarry zone defined in the operative Papakura District Plan of Auckland Council, and therefore subject to the rules of that Plan, quarrying is permitted.

In 2001 Winstone established a Community Liaison Group (CLG) at Hunua Quarry which consists of representatives from the local community, Auckland Council and Winstone management. The CLG’s objectives are to provide a forum where relevant matters about the quarry’s operations and any development plans can be raised and discussed with a view to resolving any issues, and to achieve ongoing good relations and mutual trust between quarry management and the local community.

For example, while strictly not development, a resource consent to divert a volume of groundwater has been applied for to enable completion of the excavation of the Hunua pit by allowing the additional ground water intercepted by the pit as it is lowered to be pumped out. At a CLG meeting (8 March 2011) a presentation was made about the pending application, and an undertaking given that when the application was lodged all documentation would be made available for viewing on this site.  An overview page with links to the suite of application documents is now available here.

The CLG meets regularly, and meeting notes and minutes are recorded and distributed to attendees. Interest in the CLG can be registered at or by writing to Hunua Quarry CLG, Winstone Aggregates, PO Box 17195, Greenlane, Auckland.

Other Community Consultation and Involvement

Public open days are a regular occurrence at the quarry and are notified by letter drop and through local newspaper advertising. The most recent was in April 2011 and was attended by several hundred people.
